However, unlike Scotch, there are currently no formal regulations around the production of American single malt whiskey, meaning that distilleries have a great deal of leeway in making and marketing their product.
One of the key differences between American single malt whiskey and other types of whiskey is its flavor profile. Due in part to the use of pot stills in the distillation process, American single malt whiskey often features sweet, nutty, toasty, biscuit, bread, and toffee-like notes. It has a distinctive taste thanks to processed cereal grains that are used.

Distilling American Single Malt Whiskey
Unlike Bourbon, which must be made with a minimum of 51% corn, American Single Malt Whiskey is made entirely from malted barley. The malted barley is mashed with hot water, releasing the sugars that will help with fermentation. The liquid produced is called “wort” and is then fermented with yeast, which converts the sugars into alcohol.
The resulting liquid, or “wash,” is then distilled in copper pot stills. The filtered liquid is then aged in oak barrels, giving it a unique flavor. The aging process is what really sets American Single Malt Whiskey apart from other Whiskeys. The Whiskey is usually aged for at least three years, with some distilleries aging it up to 10 years. This results in a smoother and more complex flavor profile.
